1720 LETTER TO VENETIAN MERCHANT NICCOLO CARAGIANI FROM THOMAS WILLIAMS, SOUTH SEA BUBBLE - A 1720 ALS letter from English Merchant Thomas Williams to the important Venetian Merchant Niccolo Caragiani, regarding shipments to Livorno, Genoa, and Sicily, as well as the economic troubles currently being experienced due to the 'South Sea Bubble' financial crisis. Williams, translated from Italian to English, states ”I shall greatly appreciate the honor of your continued orders, given my hope that the current scarcity will not be long-lasting. The terrible torrent that rapidly sweeps all the money away to the ”South Sea” ocean has virtually halted the flow; whoever offers the price gets the money—there is no time to wait for a reply—while someone else carries it off, and very little remains. This is the current situation.” Dated London (Londres), 22nd April, 1720. Dimensions: 14 3/4 x 9 1/2 in., (37.5 x 24.1 cm.) Condition: Delicate, with frayed edges, some splitting at creases. Intact. Retains red wax with seal with saltire symbol legible. Please make all inquiries before bidding.
