Bidspirit auction | A KING GEORGE III INSPECTOR

A KING GEORGE III INSPECTOR OF HIS MAJESTY'S CANALS TIPSTAFF, 1804 - A rod/scepter known as a tipstaff dated 1804, for use by the Inspector of His Majesty's Canals during the reign of King George III, the very same king who reigned during the American Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars. Tipstaves are a largely symbolic item, modeled after the clubs which the officers (who were also known as a Tipstaff themselves) would have carried in centuries past. The staff is composed of an oblong wooden handle affixed to a polished brass shaft engraved with the text 'III GR/Inspector of His Majesty's Canals/1804'. An egg shaped finial protrudes from the end. Georgian England, 1804. Dimensions: L: 14 in., (35.6 cm.) Condition: Very good condition for age. Some minor chips, scratches, and dents to wooden handle. Light patina to brass, still mirror reflective. Please make all inquiries before bidding.
