Bidspirit auction | A GERMAN WWII LAPPLAND SHIELD,

A GERMAN WWII LAPPLAND SHIELD, 1945 - Field-made cast aluminum campaign shield of tapered form, surmounted by a droop-winged eagle above the inscription ”LAPPLAND” and a schematic map of northern Scandinavia. Pierced with three mounting holes for attachment to a uniform sleeve. Instituted in February 1945, the Lappland Shield was the final commemorative campaign award authorized by the German Wehrmacht during the Second World War. It was awarded to members of Generaloberst Fritz Böhme's 20th Mountain Army for service in the Lapland campaign against Finnish and Soviet forces between November 1944 and May 1945. Owing to wartime shortages and the circumstances of production, many examples were cast locally in field workshops or later produced in prisoner-of-war camps, resulting in considerable variation in manufacture and finish.
