Bidspirit auction | AN ISLAMIC QALAMDAN PEN BOX

AN ISLAMIC QALAMDAN PEN BOX WITH ELEGANT MAMLUK INSPIRED DESIGN - An Islamic Qalamdan, or pen box, with a sliding drawer and elegant Mamluk-inspired design. This piece might be from more Ottoman-influenced areas of the Qajar Empire in the very late 19th century. The pen case has smooth edges with a curvy profile. Built from hammered iron, with a masterfully engraved surface on all of its sides, inlaid with silver and brass floral patterns. At the center of the upper part, a wide band at its center contains Arabic calligraphy divided into three cartouches. The text most probably speaks about auspicious Surahs of the Quran, a popular and recurrent presence on this type of object, usually with Surah Al-Alaq (The Value of the Pen), Surah Al-Qalam (The Oath of the Pen), and also Surah Al-Infitar (The Cleaving). In this particular case, we were unable to identify. Dimensions: L: 8 in., (20 cm.) Condition: Very good. Surface wear and patina. Oxidation on the inner compartment.
