A RUSSIAN AVANT-GARDE THEATRICAL COSTUME DESIGN ”MASQUERADE”, CA. 1920 - A Russian theatrical costume design titled ”Маскарад” (”Masquerade”), probably 1910s-1920s, executed in watercolor and gouache on paper. Depicting a flamboyantly dressed male figure in profile wearing an exaggerated blue hat and an elaborate red, purple and blue costume with bold scrolling ornament. Signed or inscribed in Cyrillic lower left and titled ”Маскарад” lower right. Dimensions: 11 7/8 x 8 1/4 in., (30.2 x 21 cm.) Condition: Some spots of foxing. Some wrinkling to corners.
