A 19TH CENTURY CONTINENTAL SCHOOL OIL ON CANVAS PORTRAIT OF A RABBI - A finely rendered portrait of an elderly bearded rabbi or Jewish scholar shown in profile, gazing upward and wearing a dark garment beneath a gold-brown prayer shawl with striped borders. An open religious text rests before him, reinforcing the subject as a figure of study and devotion. Executed in a restrained, dark palette with dramatic illumination of the sitter's face, beard and garment. Apparently unsigned. Presented in an elaborate period-style giltwood and composition frame. The subject belongs to a well-established tradition of 19th-century European Jewish genre and portrait painting. Comparable depictions of rabbis and Jewish scholars were produced by a number of Central European artists, most famously Isidor Kaufmann, although I see no basis from these photographs for attributing this painting to a particular artist.
