A SCARCE RUSSIAN GILT-SILVER BASMA ICON OF THE VLADIMIR MOTHER OF GOD, 17TH CENTURY - A Russian Orthodox icon depicting the Vladimir Mother of God, with the Christ Child tenderly embracing the Virgin and pressing His cheek against hers. Tempera on wood panel. The icon is mounted with a gilt-silver basma finely embossed with dense scrolling foliage and floral motifs. The raised halo is similarly decorated and set with two cabochon stones. The traditional abbreviations ”МР ΘУ” identify the figure as the Mother of God. Russia, 17th century. Dimensions: 12 x 10 in., (30.5 x 25.5 cm.) Condition: Age-related wear. The panel is noticeably bowed and has two inset battens on the reverse. Craquelure, abrasions, darkening, and areas of restoration to the painted surface. The basma shows tarnishing and wear to the gilding. Please make all inquiries before bidding.
