A LARGE RUSSIAN STAUROTHEKE ICON OF THE CRUCIFIXION, 19TH CENTURY - A large Russian Orthodox staurotheke icon, tempera and gilding on wood panel, centered by an inset cast brass eight-pointed Orthodox Crucifix with extensive blue and white enamel decoration. The cross depicts Christ Crucified beneath the Image Not Made by Hands, with angels above, the sun and moon flanking the crossbeam, and Golgotha with the skull of Adam below. The reverse of the cross is densely engraved with scrolling floral and foliate ornament. The painted composition surrounding the cross depicts the Deposition from the Cross at upper left and the Entombment of Christ at upper right. Below, groups of holy figures flank the Crucifixion against a stylized walled city. Dimensions: Icon: 17 7/10 x 14 1/2 in. (45 x 36.8 cm)., Cross: 14 9/10 x 7 4/5 in. (37.8 x 19.8 cm). Condition: Age-related wear. Vertical cracking and separation in the wood panel, particularly at the upper center. Scattered losses and abrasions to the painted and gilt surfaces, with larger losses along the lower and lateral margins. Craquelure, surface dirt. The brass cross with rubbing, oxidation and losses to the blue and white enamel.
