A JAPANESE CARVED WOOD FIGURAL GROUP OF BOYS RIDING A WATER BUFFALO, TAISHO ERA - A large Japanese carved and stained wood figural group, Taisho era, early 20th century, depicting a recumbent water buffalo carrying two animated boys upon its back. The buffalo is naturalistically rendered with finely incised hair, sweeping horns and an expressive face, with inset eyes. The figures and animal are carved in a warm reddish-brown wood and set upon a separately carved dark wood base densely worked with flowering plants and foliage. An impressive and highly decorative example of Japanese figural carving. Dimensions: 9 1/4 x 20 x 9 in., 23.5 x 51 x 23 cm.) Condition: Very good. General wear on surface.
