AN AUGUSTE DE WEVER BELGIAN BRONZE FIGURE OF MEPHISTOPHELES, LATE 19TH CENTURY - Depicting Mephistopheles by Auguste De Wever (Belgian, 1836–1910). The Mephistopheles is depicted standing in a dramatic theatrical pose with head tilted upward and one arm raised toward his face, the figure modeled in a tight-fitting Renaissance-inspired costume with a pointed cap, flowing cape, and sword at his side. The elongated and expressive composition captures the mischievous and sinister character associated with the legendary demon from the Faust tradition. Raised on an octagonal molded plinth base. Signed ”De Wever” to the terrace and further inscribed ”Europe” and ”Mephistopheles.” Dimensions: H: 23 1/4 in., (59 cm.) Condition: Overall good condition with light surface wear and scattered abrasions consistent with age. The sword is missing. Please make all inquiries before bidding.
