AN INDIAN BRONZE FIGURE OF VISHNU AS KURMA, THE TORTOISE AVATAR - An Indian cast-bronze devotional figure depicting the Hindu deity Vishnu in his manifestation as Kurma, the Tortoise Avatar, probably 19th century. The elaborately crowned deity is shown standing upon the back of a large tortoise, with multiple arms arranged symmetrically around the body, the principal hands joined in prayer and the uppermost pair raised to support a circular emblem. The figure is richly ornamented with jewelry and flowing garments, the tortoise naturalistically modeled with scaled shell, projecting head and feet. The surface with a dark brown patina and areas of green oxidation. Dimensions: H: 7 3/4 in., (19.7 cm.) Condition: Good condition with surface wear, rubbing, oxidation and areas of green verdigris consistent with age. Please make all inquiries before bidding.
