AN ITALIAN CARVED MARBLE SCULPTURE OF THE DYING GALATIAN, 19TH CENTURY - A vintage Italian carved marble sculpture representing a Dying Galatian (Gaul). Probably manufactured around the 1960s. Carved from a fine white marble stone and delicately patinated. This appealing sculpture is a smaller copy of the original, which was created circa 230 BC when an ancient Greek ruler (Attalus) and his army won the battle of the Caecus River over the Galatians, a group of migratory Celtic tribes from Thrace, who had been plundering and exacting tribute throughout most of Asia Minor for more than a generation. No signature or maker's mark is visible. Dimensions: H: 9 in., (22.9 cm.) Condition: Good overall. Repaired the anklet and both wrists. Some minor scuffs and wear on the edges.
