A PAIR OF JAPANESE BRONZE LIDDED VASES WITH DRAGON HANDLES, MEIJI PERIOD, 19TH CENTURY - A decorative pair of Japanese patinated bronze lidded vases, Meiji period, 19th century. Each of elongated baluster form, the body richly worked in relief with flowering branches and blossoms against a dense ground of stylized scrolling clouds. The neck is flanked by a pair of boldly modeled openwork dragon-form handles, their elongated scrolling bodies extending downward along the sides and incorporating geometric fretwork elements. Each vase is surmounted by a fitted domed cover decorated with foliate ornament and a tiered finial. Raised on an elaborate pierced bronze stand with shaped apron panels incorporating geometric latticework and circular auspicious motifs, terminating in four bracket feet. The dark brown patinated surface retains warm reddish and golden highlights throughout. Dimensions: 10 1/2 in., (26.7 cm.) Condition: Good overall. Dragon heads detached from lip of one vase.
