A JAPANESE TOTAI SHIPPO CLOISONNE AND PORCELAIN ”TREE BARK” VASE, MEIJI PERIOD, 19TH CENTURY - A finely decorated Japanese totai shippo vase, Meiji period, 19th century, combining porcelain with cloisonne enamel decoration. Of elongated baluster form with a tall, slender neck, widely flared trumpet mouth, and spreading circular foot. The central body is covered with a richly textured brown ground imitating the rugged surface of tree bark, embellished with fine wirework and colored enamels with naturalistic branches of pine and flowering plants, together with an insect motif. The shoulder and lower body are bordered by bands of stylized foliate and geometric ornament in red, black, and brown enamels. The exposed porcelain neck, flared mouth, and foot are painted in underglaze cobalt blue. The neck and underside of the flared rim are decorated with stylized floral and foliate motifs, while the spreading foot is painted with a continuous landscape incorporating rocks, vegetation, and birds.
