A FRENCH MARSEILLE FAIENCE MINIATURE ARMOIRE OR JEWELRY CASKET, 18TH CENTURY - A finely decorated French faience miniature armoire or jewelry casket, in the Rococo taste, of bombe form raised on four scrolling feet. The white-glazed body is richly decorated in turquoise green, gilt and manganese-purple, with molded scrolling rocaille ornament framing the front door and extending along the sides and feet. The hinged door is painted en camaieu with a pastoral courting couple in a landscape, surrounded by scattered floral sprigs, and fitted with gilt-metal hinges and a small escutcheon. The shaped top is similarly painted with an extensive pastoral scene depicting an elegantly dressed group in a landscape. The interior is fitted with two shelves and decorated with manganese floral sprays, with gilt borders. France, probably Marseille, 18th century. Dimensions: H: 9 1/2 in., (24 cm.) Condition: Age-appropriate wear with scattered rubbing and losses to the gilding and painted decoration.
