AN ENGLISH BILSTON ENAMEL AND PEWTER TRAVELING INKWELL, 18TH CENTURY - An unusual English enamel traveling writing set, probably Bilston, late 18th century. Of rectangular form with canted corners, the white enamel body is hand-painted in puce with floral sprays and vertical striped borders. The hinged lid is inset with an enamel plaque painted in puce with a pastoral architectural landscape. The dark pewter mounts include a hinged frame, clasp and fitted upper plate enclosing two removable cylindrical receptacles, one with a pierced cover, forming a compact traveling inkwell and pounce pot. The verso retains old paper collection or dealer labels, including one inscribed ”M. SANDE ... DE BLANC, PARIS.” Dimensions: 1 1/4 x 2 7/8 x 2 1/4 in., (3 x 7.5 x 5.5 cm.) Condition: Very good.
