A CHINESE EXPORT FAMILLE ROSE PORCELAIN DESK INKSTAND - Chinese export porcelain, Qing dynasty, probably late 18th to early 19th century. Of octagonal architectural form, the fitted writing stand brightly decorated in famille rose enamels and gilt with birds, butterflies, insects, flowering plants and stylized foliate borders. The top fitted with two removable octagonal vessels with covers, a rectangular covered compartment, two pen rests and a central candle socket. The sides are painted with alternating landscape and bird panels within floral borders. The arrangement is characteristic of Chinese export writing sets made for the European market. A closely related late 18th-century octagonal famille rose inkstand is recorded with four removable wells surrounding a central candle holder. Dimensions: D: 7 1/8 in., (18.1 cm.)
