A RARE RUSSIAN TULA STEEL SEWING BOX, MARKED T. I. SVECHNIN, FIRST HALF OF THE 19TH CENTURY - Russian, Tula, first half of the 19th century. The rectangular polished-steel sewing box is raised on four ball feet and decorated with applied floral swags in contrasting silver-colored and copper-toned metals. The domed slip-on cover is embellished with further floral ornament and surmounted by a turned standard supporting a stylized bird-form spring mechanism intended to hold thread. The underside of the cover is fitted with a burgundy fabric pincushion. The box retains its decorated screw-operated table clamp. Stamped in Cyrillic: ”Т. И. СВЕЧНИН”. Dimensions: 3 3/8 x 2 3/4 x 8 1/2 in., (8.6 x 7 x 21.6 cm.) Conditions: Clamp functions well. Light oxidation throughout. Please make all inquiries before bidding.
