A RARE RUSSIAN BRASS-INLAID TULA STEEL SEWING BOX WITH BIRD-FORM THREAD HOLDER, CIRCA 1810 - Russian, Tula, early 19th century. The polished-steel sewing box of rectangular form, raised on four ball feet and decorated with floral swags, suspended rosettes, leaves, and ribbon motifs highlighted with contrasting brass and polished-metal inlay. The domed slip-on cover is divided into four ornamented panels and surmounted by a turned standard supporting a stylized bird-form spring mechanism designed to hold thread. The underside of the cover is fitted with a salmon-colored fabric pincushion. Dimensions: 3 3/8 x 2 7/8 x 4 1/4 in., (8.6 x 7.3 x 10.8 cm.) Conditions: Good condition overall. Gilt accents faded.
