A RUSSIAN GILT-SILVER AND ENAMEL LIDDED CONTAINER BY P. OVCHINIKOV, 1882 - Pavel Ovchinnikov, Moscow, 1882. Of baluster form on three ball feet, the cylindrical body surmounted by a domed cover with an onion-shaped finial, the whole finely enameled in varicolored shaded cloisonné with scrolling foliage, flowers, and geometric ornament against stippled gilt grounds. The cover and body both have repeating heart-shaped reserves of white enamel enclosing green foliate motifs, alternating with blue star-studded reserves, further ornamented with multicolored floral sprays and intricate ropework borders. The upper and lower registers are encircled by white bead-like enamel bands. The interior is richly gilded. Hallmarks: the Imperial Warrant (double-headed eagle) above Cyrillic ”P. OVCHINIKOV”, assayer's Cyrillic initials ”I.K.”, date 1882, 88 silver standard, and St. George Moscow city mark. An additional 88 silver and a partial Cyrillic mark to cover the rim. Weight: 15.7 o., 446 g. Dimensions: L: 6 3/4 in., (17.3 cm.) Conditions: Excellent with enamel perfectly preserved, some light scratching to interior and bottom.
