A RUSSIAN CASED SILVER-GILT AND NIELLO TABLEWARE SET, PAVEL OVCHINNIKOV, MOSCOW, 1868 - The 19-piece set comprises twelve teaspoons, a large serving spoon, serving fork, knife, tea strainer, sugar scoop, sugar tongs and a tripod salt cellar. The silver-gilt utensils are decorated in niello with scrolling ornament, Greek-key borders and finely detailed architectural views of Moscow, including the Kremlin. Several pieces bear an engraved owner’s monogram. Hallmarked in Cyrillic ”P. Ovchinnikov” beneath the Imperial eagle, with the assay master’s initials В.С. for Viktor Savinkov, Moscow city mark, and 84 zolotnik standard. The steel knife blade bears Varypaev's Imperial Court supplier mark (Придворная Фабрика Варыпаев). Contained in the original fitted burgundy case with velvet interior and silk-lined lid, stamped in gold with the Ovchinnikov name and Imperial warrant. Dimensions: 12 5/8 x 8 3/8 x 2 3/4 in., (32.1 x 21.3 x 7 cm.) Conditions: Tableware in excellent condition, with only minimal signs of age and use, including some light wear to the niello on the tongs' handle. Case with some scuffs/rubbing on the surface.
