A RUSSIAN GILT-SILVER AND CLOISONNE ENAMEL KOVSH, CIRCA 1897 - Of traditional boat-shaped form with a raised prow and shaped handle, the body is richly decorated in shaded polychrome cloisonné enamel on a gilt ground with stylized foliate scrolls, varicolor blossoms, and geometric motifs in turquoise, white, green, blue, red, and purple enamel beads. The upper rim features a border of turquoise cabochon-style cells beneath a row of pendant enamels. The handle is engraved with the dates ”1847” and ”1897”, commemorating a 50-year jubilee or anniversary, and further monogrammed with a ”D” in a Gothic script. The interior is entirely fire-gilded, preserving its rich golden tone. Hallmarks: maker’s mark: АЕК (for Evgeny Karpov Alexeyev), a renowned Moscow silversmith active ca. 1890s. 84 Silver Standard (zolotnik), Moscow city mark with St. George slaying the dragon, scratched inventory number 7154. Stamped: ”MADE FOR TIFFANY & CO.” with the number 734. Weight: 5.1 o., 146 g. Dimensions: L: 5 1/2 in., (14 cm.) Conditions: Excellent. Enamel well preserved.
