A RUSSIAN REVIVAL SILVER TROMPE L’OEIL KRINKA-FORM MILK JUG, MARKED SAZIKOV, MOSCOW, 1864 - Of traditional Russian krinka form, the jug is modeled in imitation of a rustic earthenware milk vessel, with a broad compressed body tapering to a spreading cylindrical foot, a tall waisted neck encircled by horizontal ribs, and a substantial loop handle. The shoulder is finely engraved with bands of geometric ornament enclosing an inscription in elongated, archaistic Cyrillic script, interrupted by a circular rosette: ”ПРАДѢДЫ НАШИ КУШАЛИ ПРОСТО, ДА ЖИЛИ НА СВѢТѢ ЛѢТЪ СО СТО.” (”Our forefathers ate plain fare, yet lived to be a hundred.”) The underside is fully marked with the assay master’s initials ”В.С” above the date 1864 for Viktor Savinkov, the Moscow city mark of St. George, 84 silver standard, and the firm’s Cyrillic signature ”САЗИКОВЪ” beneath the Imperial double-headed eagle.
