The cylindrical body is engraved to simulate birch bark, a motif popular in Russian decorative arts for its evocation of national identity and rustic elegance. The hinged lid with thumbpiece is bordered by a serrated edge, echoing traditional forms. Gilded interior. Hallmarks: tankard bottom: lion, Cyrillic letters ”Э.Б”, 1863, 84 silver proof, Anchor St Petersburg mark, Kokoshnik; later addition: 875 Soviet silver proof; later addition: 875 Soviet silver proof with kokoshnik. Lid: Anchor for St. Petersburg mark, later addition: Soviet 875 silver proof and kokoshnik, 84 silver proof; later addition: 875 silver proof with kokoshnik; kokoshnik. Weight: 13.3 oz. 378 g.
