A DAUM NANCY ENAMELED GOBLET, RUSSIAN EAGLE, 1893 - Daum Nancy, France, 1893. Acid-etched and decorated in enamels and colours with a single and a double-headed eagle, with the Cross of Lorraine, stars, and anchor, ribbons, and inscribed “Plus Penser Que Dire” and ”Qui s'y frotte s'y pique”, signed in gilt Daum Nancy with Cross of Lorraine. NOTE: Such goblets were intended for the officers of the Russian Mediterranean squadron, consisting of five ships under the command of Admiral F.K. Avelan (1839–1916), which paid a friendly visit to France in October 1893. The exchange of visits was connected with the conclusion of a military convention between France and Russia, created in opposition to the Triple Alliance of Germany, Austria, and England. The goblets' model was created by the factory owners, August (1853–1908) and Antonin (1864–1930) Daum. A total of 200 cups were made. The same cup is kept in the collection of the State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg. Literature: Noel Daum, Daum Mastery of Glass, Lausanne 1980, p. 41, similar illustration.
