A PAIR OF RUSSIAN PORCELAIN CANDLESTICKS, IMPERIAL PORCELAIN FACTORY, ST. PETERSBURG, PERIOD OF ALEXANDER II (1855–1881) - Each modeled in an elaborate historicist style and decorated with a turquoise ground enriched with extensive gilding. The spreading stepped circular bases are molded with scrolls, palmettes, and acanthus ornament, rising to tapering architectural stems applied with gilt laurel swags. Each stem is set with four oval reserves painted with polychrome bouquets of flowers against pale-blue grounds and enclosed within gilt borders. The upper sections are formed as faceted columns supporting circular drip pans molded with floral rosettes. The sconces are decorated with gilt masks and white-and-gilt scrolling ornament. Each marked beneath with the underglaze green Imperial cipher of Alexander II. Dimensions: H: 12 3/4 in., (32.5 cm.) Conditions: Very good. Some minor wear on gilt areas.
