AN IMPERIAL RUSSIAN PORCELAIN TWO-TIER CAKE STAND FROM THE ELAGIN ISLAND PALACE SERVICE, CIRCA 1823 - An exceptionally rare and important Imperial Russian porcelain two-tier cake stand or tazza from the celebrated Elagin Island Palace Service, produced by the Imperial Porcelain Factory during the reign of Emperor Alexander I, circa 1823. The stand is executed in the neoclassical taste, comprising two circular dishes mounted on a richly gilded central support rising from a baluster stem and spreading circular foot. The upper finial is formed as a pinecone or fircone, echoing Empire period decorative vocabulary derived from classical antiquity. Each plate bears an underglaze factory mark ”HI” (reign of NI).
