A SOVIET VERBILKI PORCELAIN FIGURAL COVERED SALT CELLAR, ”THE PEASANT DRINKING FROM A KOVSH” - Dmitrov Porcelain Factory, Verbilki, formerly Gardner, circa 1927–1932. After an earlier Gardner model, naturalistically modelled and polychrome-painted as a seated, bearded peasant drinking from a large brown kovsh, wearing a spotted lilac tunic, dark trousers, wrapped leggings and bast shoes. Seated beside a simulated wooden barrel forming a covered salt cellar, the removable cover moulded and painted as wooden planks, all raised upon a rectangular base. Marked beneath in underglaze blue with the Soviet state emblem and Cyrillic Dmitrov Porcelain Factory, Verbilki factory stamp. Dimensions: H: 5 5/8 in., (14.3 cm.)
