AN AUSTRIAN, VIENNA, LATE 19TH CENTURY ENAMELED AND GILT BRONZE TAZZA - Of elegant and theatrical design, the tazza is formed with a shallow oval dish supported by a figural stem and a domed base. The bowl is finely enameled with continuous landscape scenes to the exterior and a richly painted mythological tableau to the interior, depicting classical female figures and attendants gathered around a sculptural monument in an Arcadian setting. The rim is bordered with intricate polychrome scrollwork interspersed with small portrait masks in the Renaissance revival taste. The vessel is supported by a finely cast gilt bronze figure of a young courtier or page in 18th-century dress, standing contrapposto and holding attributes, executed with lively detail and finished in a warm gilt patina. The base is of domed form, richly decorated in hand-painted enamel reserves depicting allegorical and mythological scenes, including reclining and winged figures, surrounded by dense ornamental scrollwork and grotesque masks in the characteristic Vienna style. The handles of the dish are cast in gilt bronze as scrolling foliate forms terminating in stylized masks, further reinforcing the Renaissance revival aesthetic. The underside of the bowl retains gilded decoration with additional landscape painting, demonstrating the high level of craftsmanship throughout. This example is representative of the finest Vienna workshop production of the late 19th century, often associated with firms such as Hermann Böhm or similar makers working in the tradition of Vienna enamel wares.
