A SALVADOR TERÁN (1920–1974) MEXICAN BRASS COFFEE SET, 20TH CEN. - A modernist brass coffee set by Mexican artist Salvador Terán (1920–1974). The set is comprised of 4 pieces, the first being a large tray of an irregular, curved, triangular shape with its surface decorated with glass mosaic pieces in blue and brown colors, with splatter type shapes surrounding three recesses meant to hold the other pieces of the set. The remainder of the set consists of a lidded sugar bowl with spoon, a creamer, and the coffee pot itself, all decorated in a similar manner. Each is of a cylindrical form, tapering towards the top, and being affixed with a curved handle attached via a ring around the base, the handle and ring both being decorated with brown mosaic pieces. Salvador Terán was born and raised in Taxco, a Mexican city renowned for its history of quality silversmithing. He took an interest in the craft at an early age, apprenticing under famed silversmith William Spratling at Las Delicias, then joining his cousins, the Castillo Brothers at the famous Los Castillo workshop, before eventually starting his own venture in Mexico City in 1952 which he called La India Bonita.
