THREE SOVIET PORCELAIN FIGURES DEPICTING CHARACTERS FROM NIKOLAI GOGOL’S ”DEAD SOULS”, USSR, MID 20TH CENTURY - Comprising three Soviet porcelain figures representing characters from Nikolai Gogol’s satirical novel ”Dead Souls”, each modeled in glazed porcelain with hand-painted polychrome decoration. The group includes a standing gentleman with hands clasped behind his back, embodying a reserved provincial landowner, a figural group of two animated male characters shown in close interaction, suggestive of comic intrigue or negotiation, and a third figure depicting a theatrical gentleman in a red coat posed beside an upholstered chair, gesturing expressively as if in conversation. The figures reflect the Soviet tradition of literary porcelain, translating classic Russian literature into sculptural form with emphasis on caricature, psychology, and narrative gesture. Each figure stands on an integral circular base, the undersides of which bear printed Soviet factory marks and model numbers consistent with mid-20th-century USSR production.
