A MEIJI PERIOD JAPANESE BRONZE GROUP OF CRANES, LATE 19TH CENTURY - A finely cast and gilt bronze figural group depicting two Japanese cranes standing upon a naturalistically modeled rocky ground, one crane shown upright with neck extended and beak open, the companion bending forward with head lowered. The birds are rendered with finely chased plumage, the bodies enriched with warm gilt patination, contrasting with darker patinated legs and tail feathers. The oval base is integrally cast and modeled as uneven terrain, incorporating a small subsidiary animal form at the foreground, all resting on an irregular bronze plinth. The sculptural composition reflects the Meiji period fascination with naturalism and animated animal subjects, intended for export and decorative display, and demonstrates skilled bronze casting and surface finishing typical of late 19th-century Japanese metalwork.
