AN EARLY SOVIET ENGRAVED GILT-SILVER CIGARETTE HOLDER, 1928 - Rectangular with rounded corners, the exterior is engraved with a Constructivist industrial composition centered by a stylized factory complex with stepped buildings, smokestacks, and geometric architectural forms, interlaced with crossed tools, cogwheels, banners, and laurel branches symbolizing labor, industry, and socialist progress. The design executed in fine linear engraving against a matte ground is characteristic of the early Soviet graphic language of the late 1920s. The thumbpiece is set with a polished green hardstone cabochon. The interior fire-gilt, marked with Cyrillic initials ”PAS” and stamped with 875 silver standard marks, is a Soviet silver production following the abolition of Imperial assay systems.
