Bidspirit auction | AN OIL ON BOARD PORTRAIT
AN OIL ON BOARD PORTRAIT OF A CLOWN, AVI HARPOZ, ISRAELI SCHOOL, LATE 20TH CENTURY - Oil on artist’s board depicting a psychologically charged portrait of a clown rendered in a fractured, almost cubist-inflected manner. The composition centers on the head and shoulders, with the face divided into angular planes that create a striking duality between light and shadow. The clown’s expression is somber and introspective rather than theatrical, with downcast eyes and a muted red mouth, conveying a sense of melancholy beneath the costume. The palette is dominated by warm ochres, creams, and browns, contrasted by deeper shadowed passages, while the hair explodes outward in expressive, sweeping brushstrokes that heighten the emotional intensity of the image. Signed lower right ”Harpoz.” The work is mounted on board and housed in a dark-stained wooden frame with an inner gilt slip and fabric-lined spacer, giving the painting a strong, intimate presentation consistent with late 20th-century figurative expressionism.
