Bidspirit auction | AN ABSTRACT COMPOSITION, SIGNED “BADILA,”
AN ABSTRACT COMPOSITION, SIGNED “BADILA,” MID-20TH CENTURY - Ink and mixed media on paper presenting a bold abstract composition dominated by sweeping black calligraphic forms animated by vivid accents of red, yellow, and green. The dynamic brushwork suggests movement and tension, with gestural strokes intersecting and overlapping to create a rhythmic, almost figurative energy reminiscent of postwar European abstract expressionism and calligraphic abstraction. The palette is restrained yet striking, with high-contrast black passages offset by sharply applied chromatic highlights and a painted green border framing the composition. Signed to the lower left “Badila.” The work reflects a mid-20th-century modernist sensibility, likely influenced by contemporaneous developments in lyrical abstraction and gestural painting, emphasizing spontaneity, motion, and expressive mark-making over representational content. The artwork is presented in a black-painted frame with a wide cream mat and glazed. The reverse is fitted with a plain backing board and hanging hardware, consistent with later 20th-century framing.
