A VIEW OF SPINOLA BAY, ST JULIAN’S, MALTA, WATERCOLOR ON PAPER, MALTESE SCHOOL, CIRCA 1960 - Watercolor on paper depicting Spinola Bay at St Julian’s Malta with its arcaded waterfront buildings traditional boats moored along the quay and a small rowing boat animated in the foreground The composition is presented as a panoramic harbor view with a strong emphasis on architectural rhythm and shimmering reflections across calm blue water The palette is bright and decorative dominated by turquoise blues warm ochres and sandy limestone tones characteristic of mid to late 20th century Maltese commercial watercolor production The work was painted by Galea a commercial artist active between circa 1960 and 1990 who maintained a studio in Valletta and produced numerous identifiable views of Maltese landmarks for the tourist and export market Signed at the lower right ”Galea” and inscribed ”Malta” The painting is housed in a period black-painted wooden frame with a wide neutral mat The reverse retains its original plain paper backing consistent with mid-century framing practices. The watercolor remains stable with well-preserved color saturation. Light scattered foxing is visible on close inspection and mild overall paper toning is consistent with age. No evident tears, staining or restoration. The frame shows minor wear to edges and corners.
