THE GOLDWEIGHER (LE PESEUR D’OR), AFTER REMBRANDT HARMENSZ. VAN RIJN (DUTCH, 1606–1669) - Finely executed etching reproducing Rembrandt’s celebrated composition The Goldweigher (Bartsch 281), depicting a merchant seated at a table weighing gold while a kneeling figure presents a bag of coins. The interior scene is rich in narrative detail and psychological tension, rendered through Rembrandt’s masterful chiaroscuro, dramatic lighting, and dense cross-hatching. This impression was produced by Armand-Durand, one of the most accomplished reproductive engravers of the late 19th century, renowned for his painstaking reconstructions of Old Master prints using original copper plates or exceptionally faithful transfers. Durand’s work was intended not as a modern reinterpretation but as a scholarly and technical preservation of early printmaking traditions, executed at a time when many original plates had deteriorated beyond practical use. The composition bears the inscription and date 1639 within the plate, corresponding to Rembrandt’s original etching. The present example corresponds to Bartsch Catalogue no. 281 and was printed under the supervision of Dominique Vincent et Cie, Paris, as confirmed by the accompanying certificate of authenticity affixed to the reverse. Certificate: accompanied by a printed Certificate of Authenticity issued by Dominique Vincent et Cie, Paris, detailing the historical context of Armand-Durand’s work, the Bartsch reference, and the nature of the late-19th-century impressions. Condition: Overall very good condition for its type and age. The impression is strong and evenly inked, with well-preserved tonal contrasts. Minor age-related toning to the paper, visible primarily in the margins. The work is framed under mat and glazing; the frame shows light wear consistent with age.
