AN IRON-MOUNTED LIDDED CHEST, 19TH CENTURY - A rectangular oak chest with a hinged lid, the surface richly mounted with wrought and pierced iron fittings of scrolling foliate design. The front fitted with an elaborate escutcheon centered by a keyhole and matching corner mounts, the lid reinforced with two wide iron bands with scalloped edges and cutout floral scrollwork, the corners studded with domed rivets. The interior likely fitted with an original or later candle box. This type of chest, often referred to as a strongbox or armada chest, reflects Northern European craftsmanship of the 19th century, inspired by earlier Gothic and Renaissance ironwork traditions. Examples of similar construction and ornament are found in German and Dutch furniture of the 17th century, revived during the 19th-century historicist period.
