A GILT AND IRON-MOUNTED CASKET, 19TH CENTURY - A rectangular casket of domed form, the body clad in dark green leather and richly mounted with finely cast and chased gilt-bronze appliqués of foliate and scroll motifs, including stylized palmettes and floral clusters. The hinged lid and front fitted with decorative straps and a working lock with its original key. The interior lined in red velvet. The base gilt and raised on bracket feet. This elegant casket reflects the 19th-century historicist revival of Renaissance and Gothic forms, characterized by rich ornament and gilded detailing. Such boxes were often produced in France or Italy as luxury decorative items or jewelry caskets, sometimes inspired by 16th-century strongboxes. Please make all inquiries before bidding.
