A RUSSIAN PAPIER-MACHE BOX - A rectangular Russian papier-mâché lacquer box, the exterior decorated with a finely executed miniature painting depicting a dramatic troika scene: three galloping horses pulling a sleigh through a moonlit forest landscape, with two passengers clutching their hats against the wind. The composition, rendered in warm ochre and earthy tones against a dark ground, is characteristic of early to mid-19th-century Russian provincial lacquer work predating the standardized schools of Fedoskino. The box is constructed of traditional pressed and polished papier-mâché, coated with multiple layers of black lacquer. The interior is finished in deep reddish-brown lacquer. The lid is hinged at the back, opening to a spacious compartment. The surface displays an attractive period craquelure consistent with age. Please make all inquiries before bidding.
