Bidspirit auction | A EUROPEAN OIL ON CANVAS
A EUROPEAN OIL ON CANVAS BATTLE SCENE, 17TH–18TH CENTURY - A dramatic and finely executed Battle Scene depicting armored horsemen engaged in fierce combat beneath a stormy sky. The tumult of motion, rearing horses, fallen soldiers, and raised weapons is captured with great dynamism and painterly vigor. The artist’s command of movement, perspective, and atmosphere aligns with the Flemish and Italian Baroque battle painters of the 17th century, notably Jacques Courtois (called Il Borgognone, 1621–1676), Philips Wouwerman (1619–1668), and their later followers. The central focus on a fallen cavalryman and his white horse lends a sense of immediacy and heroism typical of the era’s martial romanticism. Subtle lighting effects and expressive chiaroscuro emphasize the contrast between chaos and compositional order, hallmarks of late Baroque battle imagery. The work’s large scale and confident brushwork suggest that it may have originally formed part of a pair or series of military subjects intended for a noble or military patron.
