AN OIL ON COPPER PAINTING BY LAURENT DE LA HYRE 17TH CEN. - The Annunciation at the Well (or Rebecca and Eliezer at the Well), oil on copper. An exquisitely painted oil on copper attributed to Laurent de La Hyre, one of the key masters of early French classicism. The composition depicts a biblical scene, ”Rebecca and Eliezer at the Well”, rendered with remarkable refinement and balanced harmony. The figures are gracefully posed, set against an idealized landscape with classical architectural elements and luminous blue sky, characteristic of La Hyre’s refined and serene manner. Executed on a polished copper panel, the painting displays the artist’s delicate brushwork and subtle modulation of color, typical of Parisian atelier works from the mid-17th century. The emotional restraint and architectural clarity align with La Hyre’s mature period, comparable to examples in the Louvre and the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.
