AN OIL ON CANVAS PAINTING, BACCHANALE, BY JACOB VAN HAL, FLEMISH, 18TH C. - Jacob Van Hal (1672 - 1750), an oil on canvas painting, 'Bacchanale.' Against a mountainous backdrop, beneath the ruins of an ancient structure with round columns, is depicted the triumphal procession of the young Bacchus, clad only in a shawl. He sits on a green veil, wearing a wreath of grape leaves in his hair and holding a glass of wine. He is accompanied by a large group of maenads and goat-legged sileni. Housed in a richly ornate giltwood and gesso Baroque frame with a metal nameplate inscribed, 'VAN HAL Jacob Anvers 1672 - 1750.' Flemish, early 18th century. Please make all inquiries before bidding.
