A FRANCESCO BISSOLO ITALIAN RENAISSANCE OIL ON CANVAS PAINTING OF SAINT JEROME - Francesco Bissolo (1470/5 - 1544), an oil on canvas painting depicting Saint Jerome with the Cross in front of a landscape. The saint is depicted with traditional symbols: a skull in his right hand and a lion in the lower right corner. The symbolism of Saint Jerome and the lion is based on the legend of how the saint removed a thorn from the lion's paw, after which the lion became his faithful companion and a symbol of the taming of wild nature by divine piety. This combination also symbolizes the saint's strength, courage, and nobility, his ability to overcome sinful passions and temptations. Note: Francesco Bissolo was an Italian painter. He received his early training from Gerolamo il Vecchio in Treviso and later moved to Venice in 1490 to work in the workshop of Giovanni Bellini. Bissolo's early works were strongly influenced by Bellini's style, but he also incorporated elements from Palma il Vecchio and Vittore Carpaccio. Around 1510, Bissolo's style began to change, incorporating the lessons of Antonello and Cima da Conegliano, as well as the psychological introspection of Giorgione and Dürer.
