A LARGE ITALIAN SCHOOL OIL ON CANVAS PAINTING OF A LANDSCAPE SCENE, 18TH CEN. - Roman school of the 18th century, a large oil on canvas painting depicting an idyllic Italianate landscape filled with golden hazy light, with several figures near the stream on the left and on the winding road on the right. Housed in a giltwood frame with a metal nameplate inscribed, 'Salvator Rosa.' Italianate landscape symbolism evokes a vision of an idealized, harmonious, and classically inspired world. These landscapes were not realistic depictions but poetic meditations on humanity's place in nature and history. They were hugely popular with Northern European painters, known as ”Dutch Italianates, ” who were captivated by the light and ancient ruins of Italy. Please make all inquiries before bidding.
