A BATTLE SCENE, ATTRIBUTED TO ANTONIO CALZA (ITALIAN, 17TH CENTURY) - A dramatic and energetic depiction of a cavalry clash, capturing the intensity of Baroque battle painting with remarkable movement and chiaroscuro. Armored horsemen charge amid swirling dust and smoke, their raised swords and lances forming a rhythmic diagonal composition. The artist conveys both the chaos and heroism of combat through vivid gestures, powerful contrasts of light and shadow, and a warm, earthy palette heightened by flashes of red and steel. The scene’s dynamic composition and atmospheric treatment are characteristic of Antonio Calza, a follower of Jacques Courtois, known as il Borgognone, whose influence is evident in Calza’s vivid depictions of 17th-century warfare and skirmishes.
