A RUSSIAN SILVER CANDYBOWL, ENGLISH IMPORT, 1844 - A Russian silver candy bowl of a bulbous form, with round but somewhat squared sides. The bowl is sat atop a sculpted stem with a wide, multi-tiered base. The curved handles, reminiscent in form to those found on Greek kantharos, are styled as abstracted zoomorphic faces layered in acanthus leaves. This piece was imported to Victorian England from Imperial Russia. Hallmarks: 84 silver proof, 'GD', an English silver mark with 3 lions, an illegible russian assayer's mark, 1844 date mark.
