A RUSSIAN SILVER BREAD BASKET PAVEL OVCHINNIKOV, 1879 - Of oval form with twisted handles and rope-twist rim, the body finely repoussé and chased to simulate a wicker basket partially draped with a richly patterned napkin. Raised on four looped feet. The surface is delicately textured, demonstrating Ovchinnikov’s exceptional technical mastery and playful trompe-l’œil design, a favored motif of Russian silverwork in the late Imperial period. Marks: 84 zolotnik standard. Assayer’s initials M.K. and Moscow town mark (St. George for Moscow), date 1879. Maker’s mark П. ОВЧИННИКОВЪ beneath the Imperial warrant. Weight: 12.9 oz., (366 g.)
