A EUROPEAN BURGONET HELMET, PROBABLY GERMAN, 16TH CENTURY - A European burgonet helmet, complete with its original cheek plates which remain attached by their original hinges and rivets. The old foliate scrollwork engraving still shows through on much of the helmet. Burgonets like this became popular throughout the entirety of Europe in the 1500s, owing primarily to their fantastic balance of protection, visibility, and breathability. Similar examples were famously used by the Border Reivers of Scotland and England, and by the Winged Hussars of Poland, eventually being replaced by the lobster tail helmet. The construction of this piece and its engraved design appear indicate a German origin, but it cannot be determined for certain. Europe, Probably Germany, 16th century. Condition: Very good for its age with expected pitting on the surface. Engraving has been polished down in many places over the years but still shows on the crest and in some parts of the helmet. Cheek plates are still attached with hinges functional. The helmet retains its original rivets.
