A JAPANESE SOMEN ARMOR FACE PLATE, JAPAN, EDO PERIOD (17TH–18TH CENTURY) - A fine and expressive Japanese armor faceplate, of the type known as sōmen, covering the entire face and including a section of neck protection (tare). The mask is forged in iron, modeled as a fierce visage with deeply carved brows, exaggerated nose, and a grimacing mouth expressing martial intensity. The interior is coated with a rich red lacquer, symbolizing vitality and serving to prevent corrosion. The tare is composed of multiple rows of small gilt kozane (lames) laced together in alternating colors of silk cord and attached to a section of egawa a stenciled leather with floral motif — serving as the connecting flange between the neck guard and mask. The craftmanship demonstrates careful attention to both sculptural form and protective function, characteristic of Edo-period armorers who combined aesthetic vigor with battlefield utility. The exterior retains a fine dark patina from age and use. Footnote: The sōmen type mask, which covers the entire face, was reserved for high-ranking samurai and ceremonial armor sets. The distinctive facial expression, intended to intimidate opponents, reflects the spirit of bushidō and the theatrical aesthetic of Japanese martial display. Please make all inquiries before bidding. The red lacquer interior of the mask is fairly well preserved with some minor chipping to the edges.
